Case Study Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Case Study is owned by married couple Wes Russell and Christine Herman. Their first shop opened on Sandy Boulevard in the Rose City Park neighborhood of northeast Portland. The company grew one neighborhood at a time: a downtown cafe followed in 2012 and an Alberta Street cafe in the King neighborhood in 2014. Its current list also includes a cafe at Portland State University, and a new location with drive-thru ordering on SE Morrison St was announced as not yet open.
Local press and guidebooks have described Case Study as a relaxed neighborhood cafe that roasts in small batches and brews in many formats, from Chemex to AeroPress, with house-made syrups for its specialty drinks. Willamette Week readers named it Best Coffee Shop in the Best of Portland poll in 2016 and again in 2017. Its coffee pages name the producer, region, variety and process for each lot, such as Luis Jose Valdes of Finca La Cristalina in Caldas, Colombia, and Victor Calderon of Finca El Tambor in Guatemala. The Burnside Blend is labeled a partnership coffee.
What they roast
House blends include Deviation Blend (house espresso) and Burnside Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Colombia La Cristalina (natural), Ethiopia Zema Ademe (natural) and Guatemala Finca El Tambor (washed). Deviation Blend is the house espresso blend, made at the check date from Guatemala El Tambor, Ethiopia Zema Ademe and Peru Cajamarca Chirinos. Decaf Mexico Cristal Select, Mountain Water Process. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-27.

The Sandy Blvd cafe is open every day. Three more Portland cafes were listed with hours when checked, and a drive-thru location on SE Morrison St was marked as not yet open.
