Sterling Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Sterling is a small Portland roaster with one cafe in Northwest Portland, which its site introduces as the new Sterling on NW 21st Ave. In its early years Sterling built its signature Blendo Stupendo around El Borbollon, a washed Red Bourbon grown by the Alvarez family in the Santa Ana hills of El Salvador. The two later went separate ways, and Sterling has now brought El Borbollon back as a single origin. In 2022 Sterling, Spella Caffe and Cascadia Coffee Roasters announced plans to share a 2,750 square foot production facility in northeast Portland so each could grow.
The shop leans on humor: each coffee page opens with a tongue in cheek story, and every coffee is named for how it tastes, such as a Kenya Kirinyaga AA sold as grapefruit and plum. Behind the jokes are careful details. Each listing gives region, variety, process and altitude, and the decaf is a sugarcane processed Colombian roasted a little longer than the light roasts for a more traditional cup. Blendo Stupendo, a blend of Central and South American beans aimed at a classic chocolate and caramel cup, comes in 11 ounce, 2.5 pound and 5 pound bags. The shop ships free on every order.

Roast levels run light and light-medium. House blends include Blendo Stupendo (cocoa and caramel) and Roaster's Choice T2: Tak's Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: El Salvador El Borbollon, Ethiopia Sidama Shefina (washed), Kenya Kirinyaga AA, Peru Kovachii and Brazil Cooxupe Casa Blend (natural, Cooxupe co-op). Colombia decaf, sugarcane (EA) process, roasted light-medium. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-27.

The cafe on NW 21st Ave, which the site calls the new Sterling, is open daily (weekdays from 6:30, weekends from 7:30 when checked).
