Portland Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 1996. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Portland Coffee Roasters was founded in 1996 by Mark Stell, who is still its managing partner. The company was formerly called Portland Roasting Coffee Company, and it counts among the city's oldest coffee companies. From the start it bought coffee directly from farmers. Its first direct trade shipment came from the La Hilda Estate in Costa Rica, and its first project at origin, in 1999, was with Finca El Paternal in Guatemala. It still roasts La Hilda coffee every year. The company says its mission is to build human connections and a socially responsible business through coffee, and that it listens to each partner's needs rather than applying one program to everyone.
It describes itself as locally owned and operated in Portland. For its 30th year it released an Anniversary Roast that supports its projects at origin and in Portland, such as clean water access, daycare and food security. The roaster has run cafes in southeast Portland and at Portland International Airport, and it has made partner coffees, including a blend with basketball player Jusuf Nurkic and, in 2024, the Dillon T. Pickle Blend with the Portland Pickles baseball team.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium, medium-dark and dark. House blends include Organic Portland House, Goose Hollow (medium-dark), Morning, Organic French and Anniversary Roast. Single origins on the list when we checked: Costa Rica La Hilda Estate, Organic Ethiopia (its lightest single origin), Fair Trade Organic Guatemala, Organic Dark Sumatra, OPBEANS (organic Honduras, women-produced) and Endless Summer (Burundi, seasonal). Organic Espresso, roasted medium-dark. Organic decaf, offered in Nespresso-compatible capsules; described as a certified organic decaf method. Where to drink it
Its cafe at 815 SE Oak St is open daily, 6am to 4pm when checked. The SE 7th Ave headquarters keeps weekday office hours.

Goose Hollow, one of its most popular blends, is named for the Portland neighborhood. OPBEANS, a collaboration with Oregon Public Broadcasting, sends $1 from each bag to OPB's journalism and programs. Its headquarters and its cafe are both in southeast Portland, on SE 7th Ave and SE Oak St. It partnered with the Portland Pickles baseball team on the Dillon T. Pickle Blend, named for the team mascot.
