Trailhead Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2009. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Trailhead has roasted craft coffee in Portland since 2009. It roasts by hand in small batches, following precise, repeatable roast profiles. Owner Charlie says his aim is to help coffee farmers, mostly women, through trade rather than charity, by buying their coffee at prices that support a good life. Most of Trailhead's coffee relationships are direct trade. The company says it tests every decision, from green coffee to packaging and deliveries, against whether it is the most ethical option for people and the planet.
Art is part of the brand. Labels use real hand drawn and hand painted artwork, and the mascot, Tonx the Trail Dog, is the owner's own dog, painted in watercolor. Its Guatemala has been its most popular coffee since 2009, and the current line runs up to a dark roast called Campfire. The team's current focus includes rare fermented coffees alongside its everyday roasts.
Its coffees are described as organically or sustainably sourced. Trailhead skips the USDA organic label because of the cost, and says many sustainable farmers are in the same position. For the lowest waste option it sells a 3.5 pound eco bag made from 100% recycled content that goes into curbside recycling with its box.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Morning Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Guatemala. Several espressos: Black Label (light roast), Classic Espresso, Provisions (Pacific Northwest style) and a semi-dark Winter Espresso. One decaf, sold as suited to espresso or brewed coffee; the method is not stated. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-27.
Where to drink it
The site gives the roastery address but lists no cafe. Staff are usually at the roastery for in person sales on Mondays and Tuesdays.
