Heart Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2009. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Heart opened in 2009, built on the idea that a great cup should bring out the fruit flavors found in coffee. It is owned and run by Rebekah and Wille Yli-Luoma. The first cafe, on East Burnside Street in the Kerns neighborhood, is still open. A downtown West End cafe followed in 2013, and today the company lists two Portland cafes, on Burnside and in Woodstock, plus its roasting facility. Over roughly 14 years Heart has built relationships with producers in Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, Brazil and Guatemala. Staff visit farming partners through the year and travel at harvest time to help with quality control and pick lots. Heart also publishes a transparency report.
It buys seasonally, securing each coffee at its peak, and says the quality it buys is not tied to commodity market pricing. Its stated aim is financial stability for farming partners. Heart does not label coffees light, medium or dark. Each has its own profile aimed at even development and sweetness, and every bag carries a roast date and batch number. Batches that fail its quality checks go to the local food bank. Thrillist included Heart in its lists of the top coffee roasters in the country in 2013 and 2016.
What they roast
House blends include Stereo Seasonal Blend and Phono. Single origins on the list when we checked: Kenya Nyawira AA, Kenya Gachuiro AB, Kenya Karimikui AB, Ethiopia Halo, Ethiopia Habtamu Fikadu, Ethiopia Musa Abalulesa and Mexico Silvia Herrera. Colombia Decaf; the method is not stated. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-27.
Where to drink it
Two Portland cafes are open to the public and sell the full whole bean line. The cafes deliberately have no WiFi.

Roast batches that miss its quality standard are donated to the local food bank. Its cafes are in Portland's Kerns neighborhood on East Burnside and on SE Woodstock Blvd, and both stock the whole bean line for home brewing. Heart says it aims to be a supportive, safe workplace and a cafe space that welcomes everyone, and it skips WiFi to keep the cafes unplugged.
