Deadstock Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2015. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Ian Williams started Deadstock in 2015 after a long run of jobs at Nike headquarters, from retail to footwear development. The idea was to mix sneaker culture with coffee culture. The first shop opened in Chinatown, and later spots came in Beaverton and at the Hoxton. Roasting in house began in 2017. The cafe keeps no printed menu and asks guests what they feel like drinking.
Williams quit Nike after a final work assignment kept him from getting to his best friend's wedding rehearsal on time. The FAQ adds that he worked as a footwear developer, the person who works out how a designer's shoe gets made. In-house roasting started in March 2017. Nenemar, a rotating Brazilian single origin, is the house espresso, and Afrobeat is a natural from Burundi. Mikey's Blend takes its cue from Southeast Asian coffee: a dark roast ground and mixed with chicory, cardamom, cinnamon and puffed rice.
Its press page lists a Sprudge piece on a coffee sneaker made with Adidas, a Barista Magazine feature and a Portland Business Journal Forty Under 40 honor for Williams in 2020.
What they roast
Roast levels run medium and dark. House blends include Afrobeat, Mikey's Blend, Dark Jawn, Breezy and Nenemar. Single origins on the list when we checked: Afrobeat (Burundi natural), Breezy (Colombia, Don Enrique farm) and Nenemar (Brazil). Espresso: Nenemar. Decaf: Slow Jams. Why buying from Deadstock Coffee matters here
The Chinatown original sat in what the company calls Portland's streetwear hub. It also runs mobile latte service and catering around the metro. The FAQ explains the choice of city: Nike, Adidas America, Jordan Brand, Columbia and Keen are among the brands based in the Portland area, and Pensole Academy was once its next door neighbor. Signature drinks include Zero Chill, cold brew mixed with Southern sweet tea, and mochas topped with a sneaker stencil. Offices, restaurants and bars can buy its coffee wholesale.
Every bag bought from a Portland roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
