Futura Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Co-founder Sebastian Villamizar comes from Colombia. His partner CJ Speelman has worked as a barista since 2011 and earlier started Tanager Coffee Roasters. Soil regeneration drives the business, both on the farms it buys from and in the places its coffee is served. In 2024 the Portland roaster took over two Tried and True cafes in Corvallis along with Bespoken Coffee Roasters, according to Daily Coffee News.
The first Futura cafe, on NE Glisan Street in the Montavilla neighborhood, soft-opened in early 2022. Daily Coffee News counted Felipe Sardi, Elisa Madrinan, Laura Escovar and Camilo Reyes among the other Colombian founding partners. Villamizar is managing partner at the Colombian exporter Equation Coffee. In the early days Speelman roasted Equation's green coffee on a Probat at Aspect Coffee Works, a shared Portland roastery, while planning a roastery of Futura's own. To open the shop the owners seeded a soil regeneration fund with $5,000 and set aside 3 percent of coffee bar sales for it. Half of the money goes to Biodiversal projects in Colombia and half to Oregon farm soil work.
Speelman also owned The Arbor Lodge, a North Portland coffee shop. Bridgetown Bites reported in 2023 that it would reopen as a second Futura cafe, which now operates on N Rosa Parks Way.

House blends include Change Blend, LOVE Blend, ACT Blend and Cold Brew Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Daniso Horsa, El Salvador Gerardo Caceres, Guatemala El Diamante and Colombia Diego Horta. Decaf: Colombia Decaf Huila. Why buying from Futura Coffee Roasters matters here
Tried and True founders Ann and Collin Schneider had run their Corvallis shops for about ten years before selling. Futura planned to rename the cafes but keep Bespoken as a separate roasting label, bringing it to six retail sites in total.
