Jet Black Coffee Company is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Friends Karla and Travis, both from the South, opened their first shop in the Gateway District next to Food Fight! Vegan Grocery. A second shop opened in Concordia on March 20, 2023. The name comes from a song by the band Jawbreaker, and the Dear You blend is named for one of its albums. Wikipedia, citing VegNews, gives the owners' full names as Travis Coe and Karla Nolt. The two friends say they have lived in the Pacific Northwest for more than twenty years.
Before roasting in house, the shop sold a custom blend that Water Avenue Coffee produced for it, Thrillist reported, according to Wikipedia.

Why buying from Jet Black Coffee Company matters here
Pastries and bagels come from local makers such as Catscratch Vegan Bakery, Bowery Bagels and New Cascadia. Food carts have parked at the Gateway shop over the years, among them the taqueria Mis Tacones and a vegan grilled cheese cart called Ditto! For Juneteenth in 2020 the company joined other Portland businesses in giving to the Black Resilience Fund. It has also held fundraisers for the Veganville Animal Sanctuary. Drinks are made with coconut, almond, oat or soy milk, chocolate and syrups come from Holy Kakow, and the chai is from Tanglewood Beverage. An all day vegan egg and cheese sandwich is a regular order.
Every bag bought from a Portland roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
