Kaphiy Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Kaphiy is the Quechua word for coffee. Founder Zara was born in Lima and worked as a Blue Bottle barista in San Francisco during college. Stuck in Peru for ten months during the pandemic, she met Carmen Carrasco, who chairs a cooperative of 41 women coffee farmers in Jaen, Cajamarca. The women-owned, BIPOC business buys directly or through fair trade from women-run farms, and its coffee is roasted by women.
After graduate school in Europe she went back to Peru. Her father's family comes from Cajamarca, and she presents the company as a way of reclaiming the Afro Peruvian and Native South American roots she is proud of.
What they roast
Roast levels run medium-light, medium and dark. Single origins on the list when we checked: Peru San Ignacio, Cajamarca and Peru Lonya Grande, Amazonas. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-28.

Why buying from Kaphiy Roasters matters here
Bags are sold at Portland markets including King, Woodlawn, St. John's and PSU, and at People's Food Co-op. The San Ignacio coffee is picked by growers from La Coipa at a farm called La Palma in northern Peru. The shop calls its medium-light roast of that lot a Portland favorite, and suggests the Lonya Grande medium roast for espresso.
Every bag bought from a Portland roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
