Marigold Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2009. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Marigold is a women owned roasting company in Portland, founded in 2009. Green coffee is bought when each lot is at its best for the season, which the company compares to shopping a farmers market by time of year. Its roastery is at the Buckman Coffee Factory in Southeast Portland. Founder Joey Gleason trained as a chef and studied science at UC Davis. She took up roasting as a co-owner of Redwing Cafe in SE Portland, then left to focus on coffee alone and opened Marigold in 2009.
Her sister Cassy Gleason later joined the business after nearly two decades on the East Coast working for nonprofits on child nutrition, healthcare access and housing services for LGBTQ youth. Oregon Coffee Board members chose Joey Gleason as their president in 2019. The board is a membership nonprofit that promotes specialty coffee across the state.
What they roast
House blends include Squirrel Rhapsody, Kaleidoscope, Daydreamer and Bumble Bee. Single origins on the list when we checked: San Pedro, Gea Bloom, Mustefa Abakeno and Beto Narvaez. Decaf: Truly(!) Its bags are sold at New Seasons, Market of Choice, Cherry Sprout Produce and World Foods, and poured at spots like Tin Shed Garden Cafe. The Buckman Coffee Factory, a shared roasting space the sisters also run, doubles as a classroom and event hall. In 2018 Cassy Gleason told Daily Coffee News that over 40 roasters used it, from hobbyists to multi-cafe companies.
