Roseline Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2012. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.

Their story

Roseline launched in October 2012 as a small wholesale roasting operation on SE 10th Ave in Portland. Founder Marty Lopes had been the coffee buyer for the three Barista cafes in Portland, and before that cupped samples at Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters in Spokane and apprenticed at Extracto Coffee Roasters. Lopes explained the name as a nod to Portland's nickname, the Rose City, and to the red stripe baristas look for down the middle of a well pulled espresso shot. The first menu was just two washed coffees, one from Guatemala and one from Ethiopia. He started on a 1.5 kilo Proaster in the Yale Union building on SE 10th Ave and moved up to a 10 kilo Proaster within a year. In 2015 Roseline doubled its space in the same building with a training center, a quality control lab and a brewing classroom, while Lopes was still its only roaster.

Roseline later went through a change of ownership and management, with Becky Gross as president and new team members brought in for its next stage of growth. It has since grown from a wholesale roaster into a cafe company, with seven cafes in the Portland area and a roastery and lab that is its hub for training staff and wholesale clients. Roseline sources through long running relationships with farmers and supply partners and buys fresh crop coffees, treating coffee as a seasonal fruit. Its head of coffee quality says the team tests many sample roasts and meets producers at origin.

Some coffees carry social programs. Its Honduras Joel Guzman Geisha, for example, belongs to the Picker's Project, which the company describes as a program that brings farm workers into the coffee economy.

House blends include Oro, Catapult, Cartwheel and Hayride. Single origins on the list when we checked: Honduras Joel Guzman, Honduras Joel Guzman Geisha, Honduras Linda Vista, Honduras Esmerin Enamorado, Colombia Amparo Moncayo Botina, Colombia Yacuanquer, Colombia Chachagui and Ethiopia Bench Maji. Its Roaster's Choice subscription is described as suited to both espresso and brewed coffee. Decaf Altura Mexico; the decaf subscription is described as mountain water processed. Why buying from Roseline Coffee matters here

All of its cafes and its roastery are in the Portland area, from the Davis Street flagship to Montgomery Park, the KOIN Tower downtown, Alberta Street, the Goat Blocks in the Central Eastside and Lake Oswego. Roasting, packaging and distribution jobs are based at its Portland roastery, and cafe jobs at its Portland cafes. A camp cup sold in its shop was drawn by one of the company's own artists from the Montgomery Park cafe.
