Upper Left Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2015. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Katherine Harris opened the business in historic Ladd's Addition in summer 2015. She grew up as the daughter of Portland food and drink industry veterans. Coffees are roasted each day inside the neighborhood cafe, a space created with help from local makers and one that also serves a food menu. Andino, the Peruvian coffee, comes from Upper Left's longest running producer relationship, the Rutas del Inca Agrarian Cooperative. The shop describes that group as young farmers and processors working at high altitude.
Guatemala shows up as a single origin every spring and summer and in blends through the year, and the roaster built a blend entirely from Guatemalan lots to keep that profile steady.
What they roast
House blends include The Neighborhood Blend, The Cafe Standard, Ladd's, Seasonal Blend and Dark Roast. Single origins on the list when we checked: Kiambu Karatu AA (Kenya), Hafi (Burundi), Abyssinian (Ethiopia), Andino (Peru), Brazuca (Brazil) and Chapina (Guatemala). An espresso is on the list. A coffee called Ladd's and a Ladd's Addition hat take their names from the historic neighborhood around the cafe. The Ladd's coffee blends beans from Mexico with coffee from Ethiopia's Yirgacheffe highlands, and is roasted to be easy to brew at home.
