Base Coat Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2025. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The project grew out of two wishes: to learn drum roasting, and to drink extra light roasts, which the founder found hard to buy in the Pacific Northwest. Its name nods to childhood hours spent painting base coats for two artist parents. It also plays on the idea that a good roaster leaves little mark on a coffee. Most months a few green coffees are shortlisted and one becomes a roast experiment, sold with notes so buyers can send back tasting feedback.
Roasting started around May 2025: a November 2025 post marks six months and close to 100 batches on its small Proaster THCR-01 drum roaster. Its buying favors producers who are new to the specialty market or who fund education for others, and it gives priority to less represented coffee communities when it can. Two extra light styles are offered. Ultralight gets about 30 seconds or less of development after first crack, while the Nordic style gets roughly 35 to 45 seconds.
Each drop comes with a public write-up of the experiment behind it, such as how airflow affects weight loss in a Colombian Chiroso or how Maillard time compares with development time. The project says it shares far more about its own roasting than roasters usually do, and trusts its importers and exporters on green quality so it can ask producers for less.

Roast levels run light and espresso/drip profile. House blends include Primer: Rotating Single Origin Blend.
