Zamora Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The Zamora family farm lies in Guatemala's Santa Rosa department, on volcanic high ground near 1,600 meters. In 2018 the family farm joined CONEBOSQUE, a cooperative of about 35 families founded in 2004 that now runs a mill, school, clinic and solar power. Green beans travel from the cooperative straight to Portland with no importer or broker, and are roasted each Tuesday.
The farm was first planted by the owner's father and his siblings, which makes the current family the second generation to grow there. Owner Héctor Mejía Zamora went into business at age 14 in his home region of Santa Rosa, according to a SoyMigrante profile listed on the site's media page. Cherries are hand picked ripe, wet processed and sun dried, and each lot is cupped and scored before it leaves Guatemala. The family handles export paperwork and ocean freight itself.

Why buying from Zamora Coffee matters here
Its coffee is poured at both Portland locations of Por Que No, at Genie's on SE Division and at Puddletown Bagels, and bags are sold at Market of Choice stores. KGW covered a drive in which the owner gave 50 cents per pound of coffee sold to his home village in Guatemala. During the pandemic he also handed out homemade tamales. Beyond cafes and grocers, the wholesale program links other US roasters with the cooperative's farmers for green coffee, shipped through Algrano's import platform.
Every bag bought from a Portland roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
