BJ's Coffee Co. is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Forest Grove, founded in 1992. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Becky Jo, raised in Forest Grove, lived on a Kona coffee farm before returning home and opening the roastery and cafe with Ken Palmer in 1992. Her son Nathan, a licensed Q grader, now owns the business with his wife Lindsay Jo; beans are roasted to order on a twice-weekly schedule. Nathan studied architecture at college in Bend before turning to roasting; he became the house roaster in 2010, and he and Lindsay took over around 2019 when Becky Jo retired.
The company says Nathan was the youngest American to hold Q grader certification when he earned it, and that he buys through direct trade with farmers, co-ops and importers, following each harvest season. After the Ballad Shopping Center was sold in December 2024 and rent more than doubled, the family bought the Cole Carter Building at 19th Avenue and Elm Street in May 2026 to become its permanent home.

The cafe closed temporarily after water damage in August 2026; beans are still sold online with local delivery.

Some roasting happens at To The Roots Coffee Roasters, Nathan's wholesale roastery on 23rd Avenue in Forest Grove. The new building once housed Olsen Bicycles and has never held a food business, so the cafe is being built out from scratch, with customers offering to volunteer on the work. In August 2026 flooding at the old cafe forced its fixtures to be torn out, and the owners opened a fundraiser to carry staff and the move.
