Their story
The founder, who grew up around coffee in Costa Rica, began building roasters by hand in his Springfield garage in the 1980s. Cafeto started in 1984 selling to a few natural food stores and restaurants, and many of those shops still carry it. Its present roastery in the Glenwood area was built in 1998. The company says it helped set up some of the first fair trade and organic coffee contracts in Mexico in the 1980s and is certified organic by Oregon Tilth.
Cafeto describes itself as a multigenerational family company and says it pays producers above Fair Trade premiums. It has built direct relationships with growers for more than 37 years, favoring farms and cooperatives that grow coffee in bird-friendly, biodiverse settings. Certified technicians repair espresso machines, grinders and brewers from brands like La Marzocco, Astoria, Wega, Bunn and Fetco, and the company also sells and installs that equipment.
Wholesale customers range from grocery and natural food stores to drive-thrus, offices and universities, and receive weekly weekday deliveries plus syrups, sugars and paper goods.
