Eugene's coffee story
Cafe Mam is the long-running name here. Since 1990 it has sourced coffee directly from small cooperatives in Chiapas, Mexico, and the coffee it buys is certified organic, fair-trade and shade-grown. That is more than three decades of buying from the same region.
Wandering Goat came in 2004. It is locally owned and sticks to light and medium roasts. Its name comes from the old story of Kaldi, the goat herder who found his goats dancing after eating coffee cherries, a tale its site tells in full. The roastery buys all of its electricity as wind power from EWEB, the local utility, reuses shipping materials, composts roasting chaff and gives its used grounds to local gardeners. Its cafe on Madison St is also where people pick up whole beans and online orders.
Coffee Plant Roaster opened in the summer of 2013, adding another roaster to a town that already had several. The Roast Local directory now files more than a dozen roasters under Eugene, from Cafeto to Farmers Union.
Wandering Goat's roaster is part of the story too. It roasts on a Loring SmartRoaster, chosen for efficiency, and cites a study showing about 80 percent less natural gas and CO2 than a conventional roaster, with far less smoke.
