Their story

In 1989 dahinda meda, founder of Royal Blue Organics, bought a first container of coffee from the ISMAM cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico, which led to Cafe Mam. Since 1990 all of its coffee has been certified organic, fairly traded and shade grown, bought straight from small cooperatives in Chiapas. The brand is named for the Mam, an Indigenous Maya people of the Sierra Madre whose farming knowledge helped shape early organic coffee.

The company says it pays more than fair trade minimums to its partner cooperatives and has given more than 1.4 million dollars in money and products to nonprofits since 1990. Italian Roast is described as the original Cafe Mam coffee, while Mocho is now the house blend and Royal Espresso is a dark Italian style espresso. Most blends, including Tango, Trinity, Othello and Viennese, come in regular, decaf and half-caff versions, with decaf made by the Swiss Water Process.

The company gives 2 percent of coffee sales to nonprofits and donates coffee to local community events. Before coffee, dahinda meda bought Royal Blueberries in 1987, a farm west of Eugene that used no sprays, and had it certified organic the following year. The coffee office was based at the blueberry farm until the 1993 winter, then moved to a roasting plant across town; the farm still sells organic blueberry syrup.
