Their story
Wandering Goat is a locally owned roaster in Eugene, established in 2004, that focuses on light to medium roasts. Its shade-grown coffees are all certified organic through Oregon Tilth, and it roasts to order every week. Its site retells the legend of the wandering goats: an Ethiopian and Arab tale of Kaldi, a goat herder who found his goats dancing after eating the red cherries of a coffee tree.
The company says it buys only coffees grown with sustainable methods, and tries to run the business the same way: it buys 100% wind-generated power from the local utility, reuses shipping materials, composts roasting chaff and offers its organic grounds to local gardeners. It roasts on a Loring SmartRoaster, which it chose for efficiency; it cites a study showing about 80% less natural gas and CO2 than a conventional roaster, with far less smoke. Wholesale customers get barista training, menu consulting, espresso equipment and free local delivery.
What they roast
Roast levels run light and medium. House blends include Espresso Chupacabra, Capella Blend, Market Blend, Sundance, Foghorn, Heart of Darkness, Abyssinia, One Eye Open, Hair of the Goat and French Roast. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Yirgacheffe (washed), Ethiopia Guji (natural), Sumatra Aceh, Peru Approcurma, Colombia Narino and Guatemala Huehuetenango. Espresso Chupacabra. Decaf Peru Norte; the method is not stated. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-27.
Where to drink it
The Madison St cafe is open every day, 7am to 3pm when checked, with indoor and outdoor seating. Whole beans and online orders can be picked up there.
