Equiano Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Eugene. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
This family business in Eugene sources specialty lots from smallholders in places such as Viet Nam, DR Congo, Cameroon and Brazil. Much of the lineup is single varietal coffee, and the roaster also pulls a small farm, single varietal espresso. The Viet Nam coffee is a wet processed Typica from the Bon Mua farm in Lam Dong province, roasted medium.
From Brazil it carries a pulped natural Yellow Catuai grown at Fazenda Canaan, and from Bolivia a fully washed lot from Finca El Porvenir. African Ambrosia, the one dark roast on the list, blends three coffees from Africa; a Kenya called Mito and a Honduras are also offered at medium.
What they roast
House blends include African Ambrosia Blend (dark roast). Single origins on the list when we checked: Brazil Fazenda Canaan, Colombia Finca Samaria, Bolivia Finca El Porvenir, Viet Nam Bon Mua Typica, Kenya Mito and Honduras. The Tasting Room sits in the Blair commercial strip of the Whiteaker neighborhood and serves espresso drinks, teas and local pastries, with gluten free and vegan choices. In recent years it became a takeaway-only walk up window, and customers can sit at outdoor tables after picking up their drinks. Online orders ship free once they reach two bags, and problems with an order can be raised within 21 days.
