Bend's coffee roasters

A high desert town with roasters on the river, in an old alley and inside the library.

Coffee in Bend

Bend's coffee comes off the river and out of the alleys. Watershed Coffee Roasters has roasted on the banks of the Deschutes River downtown since 2013, and Bohemian Roastery, a family business, has roasted over a wood fire in Bend since 2017. Three Bend roasters on our list run their own cafes here. Multnomah Coffee Club puts a bag from a different Oregon roaster in each box, and Bend's high desert roasters are part of that rotation.

Bend's coffee story

Downtown Bend has a small lane called Tin Pan Alley, and that is where Lone Pine Coffee Roasters opened in 2009. It still calls itself a community hub, and it now has a second cafe on the east side.

Four years later Watershed set up on the Deschutes River downtown. In 2016 Still Vibrato moved its roastery to Bend from Portland. Bohemian Roastery followed in 2017 with a wood-fire roaster, run by a family.

Backporch came before all of them. Owner Dave Beach first roasted on a popcorn popper on his back porch in college, and the company has roasted in Bend since 2006. It now roasts on two American-made Loring roasters, a 70 kilo Peregrine and a 15 kilo Falcon.

Coffee here also turns up in odd places. Thump runs a cafe on the main floor of the Deschutes Public Library's new Central Library at Stevens Ranch, and you do not need a library card to order.

  • Lone Pine Coffee Roasters, Bend: its cafes make their own almond and cashew milk and their syrups from local and organic ingredients.
  • Backporch Coffee Roasters, Bend: roasting in Bend since 2006, with a staff of more than 40 and direct relationships with farms in El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia and Costa Rica.
  • Thump Coffee, Bend: cups every sample blind, with no names, prices or stories attached, before it buys, and bakes everything in house at its York Dr roastery.
  • Sisters Coffee Company, Sisters, about 20 miles away: runs two Bend cafes, one in the Old Mill District along the Deschutes and one at Jackstraw near the Box Factory.
  • Watershed Coffee Roasters, Bend: roasting on the Deschutes River downtown since 2013.
  • Bohemian Roastery, Bend: a family-run, wood-fire roaster that began in 2017.
  • Still Vibrato, Bend: opened its Bend roastery in 2016 after moving from Portland.

Bend coffee questions

Which Bend roasters sell a light roast?

Backporch roasts its single origins at the lighter end of the range, with a few medium and dark roasts alongside, as checked on 2026-09-27. Lone Pine leans the other way, with an espresso roast and the Tin Pan Alley dark roast.

When did Lone Pine open in Bend?

Lone Pine Coffee Roasters opened in 2009 in Tin Pan Alley in downtown Bend. It now runs a downtown cafe on NW Harriman St and an Eastside cafe on NE Cushing Dr.

Is there a coffee shop in the Bend library?

Yes. Thump runs a cafe on the main floor of the Deschutes Public Library's Central Library at Stevens Ranch, and no library card is needed to buy coffee there.

Which Bend roaster sells a decaf with a named process?
