Strictly Organic Coffee Company is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Bend, founded in 1999. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Owners Richard and Rhonda opened the business in 1999 and marked its 25th year recently. All of its coffee is certified organic through Oregon Tilth and the USDA and certified fair trade. Roasting runs with an afterburner to cut emissions, and chaff and grounds go to a farm for use as mulch.
The company lists three civic honors: a Greenspot Award from the Central Oregon Environmental Center, a Human Dignity Coalition business award and an employer honor from Jobs with Justice. Half-caff versions of the French roast, Komodo blend and espresso are sold, and customers can also ask for their own mix of regular and decaf beans. The cafe uses biodegradable cups and to-go containers, buys renewable Blue Sky power and pours only organic milk.
What they roast
Roast levels run Organic French Roast and Organic Italian Roast. House blends include Organic Haushammer Blend, Organic Jitterbug Blend, Organic Paso Doble Blend, Organic Samba Blend, Organic Sustainability Blend, Half-Caffe Komodo Blend and Organic Tango. Single origins on the list when we checked: Organic Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Organic Guatemalan and Organic Sumatran. Espresso: Organic Quickstep Espresso and Organic Sunnyside Espresso. Why buying from Strictly Organic Coffee Company matters here
Organic hazelnuts grown in Oregon are roasted at the Bond Street site and sold as Mom's Nuts hazelnut butter. Coffee is donated to Bend nonprofits such as Volunteers in Medicine, Bethlehem Inn and Habitat for Humanity, and orders are biked to downtown customers. Delivery anywhere in the Bend area is free with a coupon code, and orders elsewhere ship by UPS Ground. The Box Factory cafe runs a full kitchen from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with breakfast burritos, tacos and rice bowls, and has a drive-thru window for call-ahead pickup.
Every bag bought from a Bend roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
