Watershed Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Bend, founded in 2013. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The shop opened in downtown Bend in 2013 as the Looney Bean of Bend and later changed its name, keeping the same owners and staff. In 2024 it installed an electric roaster at the cafe, and all of its coffee is now roasted there in small batches. The owners say the new name refers both to their watershed moment of roasting in house and to the Central Oregon river basin where they live and play.
Its espresso is a four bean blend that goes into the cafe's lattes, and the bag list also covers a French roast, an Obsidian blend, Brazil, Costa Rica, organic Peru and Sumatra. Food runs to breakfast sandwiches, burritos and pastries brought in daily from several local bakeries.
What they roast
Roast levels run French Roast. House blends include Black Diamond Blend, Obsidian Blend and Espresso Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia (organic), Guatemala (organic), Brazil, Costa Rica, Peru (organic) and Sumatra. Four bean espresso blend used for the cafe's lattes. Why buying from Watershed Coffee Roasters matters here
One percent of sales of its compostable coffee bags goes to watershed groups, currently the Deschutes River Conservancy. The cafe lawn runs down to the Deschutes River in the middle of town. Looney Bean gift cards, punch cards and free drink cards are still accepted after the name change. Friendly leashed dogs are welcome in the backyard by the river, though only service dogs may stay indoors under state health rules.
Seating is first come, first served, and the shop no longer rents its building or yard for private events.
Every bag bought from a Bend roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
