Coffee in the Gorge and the east
Hood River has four roasters in the Roast Local directory, and tiny Maupin, on the Lower Deschutes River, has three. One of them, Maupin Coffee Co, is a women-owned roaster that air-roasts organic beans to order in 5 lb batches. Farther east, The Dalles, Pendleton, La Grande and Baker City each have a roaster of their own. Multnomah Coffee Club shares its name with Multnomah Falls, in the Gorge, and sends a bag from a different Oregon roaster in every box.

The Gorge's coffee story
The clearest story in the region comes from Maupin. Maupin Coffee Co roasts on the Lower Deschutes River, is owned by women, and air-roasts in 5 lb batches, roasting each order when it comes in. Its beans are organic. Maupin is a small river town, and it still has three roasters in the directory.
The Gorge also shapes the club's first year. Year one of Multnomah Coffee Club runs along the Columbia River Gorge: each of the first twelve boxes is named for a waterfall, starting at Fairy Falls and ending at Multnomah Falls, the twelfth stop. The coffee in those boxes comes from roasters all over Oregon. The names come from here.
