Maupin Coffee Company is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Maupin. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
This women-owned boutique roaster works in the small town of Maupin, air roasting to order in 5 pound batches. It leans toward dark, smooth roasts but will roast lighter on request, using organic, fair-trade beans. Orders can be picked up at the roastery or delivered in Portland on Fridays.
The site explains that few roasters air roast because batches are smaller than in a drum. The upside it cites is control: a customer can ask for a set darkness, such as an 8 on a 10 point scale, and get the same profile each time. Besides full bags, the shop sells pour-over sachets, sampler sets of the blends or of the single origins, and a Half Caff that mixes decaf Sumatra with regular organic Sumatra. Coffee reaches customers within days of roasting by mail, or within hours for pickups, since every batch is roasted to order.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Buckhollow Blend, Wapinitia Blend, Oak Springs Blend, Buckskin Mary Blend and Holiday Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Organic Sumatra, Organic Peru, Organic Papua New Guinea, Organic Ethiopian Guji and Organic Colombia. Espresso: Organic Espresso Blend. Why buying from Maupin Coffee Company matters here
Its blends carry the names of rapids and campgrounds along the Lower Deschutes River. Maupin sits on the wild and scenic stretch of the Lower Deschutes, about two hours from Portland or Bend, and is known for rafting and fishing. The owners say they ride motorcycles on the roads east of town when not roasting. Businesses can ask for a blend designed for them, and the roaster offers to bring samples to discuss options. A fundraisers page links groups selling its coffee.
