Their story
The owner started roasting at home more than 18 years ago with a hot air popcorn popper after a friend suggested it. Encouraged by family and friends, the owner formed Stray Cat Coffee in Baker City in 2024. The family-run roastery marked its second anniversary this year. Its coffee is also poured on trips run by GoWild, an outfitter offering backcountry and pack trips in Eastern Oregon.
The founder says the goal in starting the company was to give more people a kind of coffee they may not have tried before, bought as green beans and roasted in small lots. About 19 coffees are listed online, from a Cameroon cooperative lot and an El Salvador Bourbon to an organic Chiapas decaf and a Sumatra Lintong aged five years. Businesses that want to buy wholesale are asked to use the same contact form that handles pickup requests.

The name honors local stray cats, and the roaster asks customers to donate to Best Friends of Baker. Bags are stocked at Baker City shops including the Baker Food Co-op on Broadway Street and Old Souls Marketplace. On Main Street, sunn juice + decor brews Stray Cat coffee as drip, espresso drinks and nitro cold brew, and also sells 8 ounce bags of whole beans. Stout & Stave, also on Main Street, carries 4 and 12 ounce bags, so the coffee is sold in at least four Baker City businesses.
Every bag bought from a Baker City roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
