Ground Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Hood River, founded in 2008. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Carin Agren, a former flight attendant, bought the existing shop in 2008 after her airline went bankrupt. Roasting began in January 2009 on a 2 pound machine, followed by a 10 pound Ashe roaster in 2015. Besides its own counter, the roastery supplies sister shop Doppio up the street and a handful of wholesale accounts.
Before the sale, Ground was run by a pair of owners who wanted out of the coffee trade. Agren spent three months lining up financing and learned the business as she went. The site says most of its beans are organic and that a large share is bought directly from growers under direct trade. Other shops started asking to buy its beans a few years after roasting began, which is what pushed the move to the larger Ashe machine.

The shop says it buys many of its ingredients from local farmers and businesses to keep money in Hood River. Ground works as bakery, cafe, restaurant and roastery in one downtown space. Pastries are baked each morning, and soups, dressings and spreads are made from scratch. Its web shop sells the Terra and Underground blends in regular bags and in 5 pound bags.
