Coffee in the Willamette Valley
Salem's coffee has a long-running anchor. The Governor's Cup Coffee Roasters opened in Salem in 1991 and calls itself the city's longest-running coffee house and small-batch roaster. Up in Newberg, Caravan Coffee began in the 1990s as a cafe in a family's garage. This page covers Salem, Newberg and the valley towns without a page of their own. The valley's coffee story
Salem's roasting history is anchored by one shop. The Governor's Cup opened in 1991, and more than three decades later it still describes itself as Salem's longest-running coffee house and small-batch roaster. Salem had 181,779 residents in the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate, and Roast Local now files a string of roasters under the city, from Archive Coffee And Bar to Prismatic.
Newberg's story starts in a garage. In the 1990s Pete Miller bought an old Cape Cod style house down the street from George Fox University, moved his family in and opened a small cafe in the garage. Caravan calls it one of the first coffee shops in northwest Oregon. The garage became a meeting place for college students and retirees alike, with a bakery, a bookstore and live music alongside the coffee. The business later outgrew the garage and moved to a larger roastery, where visitors now come to a tasting room instead.
Between those two towns and south to Cottage Grove, the valley's roasters are spread thin: one or two per town in Silverton, Lebanon, Amity, Rickreall, Creswell and Cottage Grove, by the Roast Local count.

Salem
The Governor's Cup Coffee Roasters, open since 1991. Roast Local also lists Archive Coffee And Bar, Diverso Coffee Roasters, Legacy Coffee Roasters, Odolla Coffee Roasters, Oregon Coffee And Tea, Pastega Coffee Roasters and Prismatic Coffee Roasters under Salem. Keizer and Woodburn had no roaster listed when we checked.
Newberg

Springfield
Roast Local lists no roaster in Springfield. The nearest are in Eugene; see our Eugene page.
Silverton, Lebanon and the smaller towns
Silverton has two roasters on Roast Local, and Lebanon, Amity, Rickreall, Creswell and Cottage Grove one each. We have not profiled them yet.
