Howling Hounds Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Corvallis, founded in 2016. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Reid Burford started the company in 2016 in Benicia, California, when he was 14, and later moved it to Corvallis. It takes its name from his two Basset Hounds, Pepper and Basil, who watched over his early roasts. Each order is roasted by itself after it is placed. Oregon State University's InnovationX program has backed the business since Reid enrolled there in 2020.
Reid had his first real cup of coffee at 12 and was making espresso drinks for family and friends before he began roasting green beans himself. Batches are only one or two pounds, and nothing is roasted until an order comes in. The site marked the company's tenth year in 2026. Green coffee comes through small importers that buy directly from farms, according to the roaster.
The Lazy Basset, the house blend, joins washed coffees from Rwanda's Lake Kivu area and Peru's Amazonas region. Current single origins include a washed Kenya Teremuka Estate AB of SL-28, SL-34 and Ruiru 11 grown at about 2,100 meters, and a natural Yirgacheffe from Kochere.
