Bon Mua Oregon is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Salem. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Founder Lan Marberry grew up as the eldest daughter of coffee farmers in Vietnam's highlands and started farm work at age six on her father's hillside plantation. The company is family owned and also sells Vietnamese jasmine rice, sticky rice and black pepper next to its coffee. Bon Mua translates as Four Seasons, according to a Salem Business Journal profile reprinted on the company's press page.
That profile says the business took shape after Marberry joined a trade delegation to Asia, and that it first sold green Arabica and Robusta beans to wholesalers in Salem, Eugene, Bend, Portland, Seattle and Arizona. The beans come from her family's farm in Vietnam, which sits roughly a mile above sea level and uses flowering black pepper vines, rather than pesticides, to keep insects off the coffee. Marberry studied at Portland Community College and, with a Ford Family Foundation grant, at the University of Oregon, then went on to an MBA at Willamette University's Atkinson school.

Why buying from Bon Mua Oregon matters here
The company runs the Bon Mua Oregon Scholarship and says its earnings support local charities and an education foundation. The Silverton Road roastery in Salem welcomes visitors to taste samples and buy bags, and asks people to text ahead for an appointment when roasting is not under way. Early on, Salem shoppers found the roasted beans at E Z Orchards Farm Market, and bags now sit on grocery shelves around the region. Before starting the company, Marberry logged volunteer time with Meals on Wheels in Lake Oswego and Food for Lane County.
