Caravan Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Newberg. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Founder Pete Miller bought an old Cape Cod style house near George Fox University in Newberg, moved his family in and opened a small cafe in the garage in the 1990s, making it one of the first coffee shops in northwest Oregon. The garage cafe became a meeting place for everyone from college students to retirees, with a bakery, a bookstore and live music alongside the coffee. As he learned more, Miller built relationships in coffee growing regions, and Caravan says it gives back to those communities through projects ranging from fresh water supplies to a community band.
Caravan buys to a written sourcing standard it calls S.E.T.: a specific social impact in the region, sustainable environmental practices, and traceability to a farm or cooperative. It has been a member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America since 1998, and its roastmaster holds Roasters Guild certifications and is a certified Q grader through the Coffee Quality Institute. The business outgrew the garage and moved to a larger facility, where customers now visit a tasting room instead.
What they roast
House blends include Basecamp, Capstone, Daybreak, Sidecar, Vagabond and Switchback. Single origins on the list when we checked: Colombia Finca Palmichal, Ethiopia Zema (natural), Peru Cafe Femenino, Brazil Oberon (natural), Guatemala El Pacayal, Nicaragua Aranjuez (natural) and Costa Rica La Victorina. The tasting room sells espresso flights, including a traditional espresso flight. Two decaf blends, Morning Glory Decaf and Northstar Decaf; methods not stated. Where to drink it
The tasting room in Newberg is open Monday to Saturday (weekdays 7am to 3pm, Saturday 9am to 3pm when checked) and offers coffee flights, guided tastings and tours.

Caravan began down the street from George Fox University in Newberg, and the founder says the cafe brought the world of coffee to his community. The tasting room pitches itself as a way to experience Oregon wine country through coffee, with a Northwest Pine Latte made from a house syrup of pine, juniper and vanilla. Its coffee is sold at local grocery stores, natural food stores and boutiques.
