Capitol Press Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Hillsboro, founded in 2010. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Steve Lanphier worked in coffee from 1994, roasting for other Portland companies, and in 2010 bought a 1988 Probat L12 roaster he called Alice. The name joins two capitals, Salem and Sacramento, where the company's early coffee went to cafes. After Steve died in 2017, his wife Noreen and their children kept roasting under the same name.
Before this company, Steve was a master roaster at Portland Roasting and at Caffe D'arte, a Seattle company,, and he later trained baristas, helped open shops and consulted. His nickname on the site is the Coffee Jedi. Noreen Sullivan-Lanphier now roasts. She writes that Steve explored Papua New Guinea and that the two of them traveled to Brazil to visit coffee farms together. Steve's Original, a medium blend of South American, Central American and African beans, was created by the founder, and the shop says it won two Golden Bean awards, in 2017 and 2019.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Steve's Original and Signature House Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Guatemala, Brazil Jazblu Peaberry, Costa Rica, Peru and Limited Edition Geisha. Decaf: Mexican Decaf. The roaster returned to the Helvetia Lavender Festival in the hills near Hillsboro in 2026. Its beans are poured at the Sesame Donuts shops around the Portland metro area, Honey and Pine Espresso in Redmond and Bend, and the Hangry Redhead in Banks. The roastery sits in the same Hillsboro suite on NE Aloclek Drive that Blind Coffee Roasters and Roasted by Mom use, and customers can pick up orders there. Local events fill its blog: the Hillsboro Coffee Fair in 2023, Providence artisan and craft fairs, and several years at the Helvetia Lavender Festival.
Every bag bought from a Hillsboro roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
