Cosmopolis Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Founder Conor Carrigan traces the company to his great-uncle Rafael Parga Cortes, a farmer and community leader in Tolima, Colombia, who owned a farm called La Montana. That great-uncle pushed neighbors to grow coffee on steep land and to plant other crops beside it, and argued for fair pay to farmers. Beans come from cooperatives and small farms, and the company says it pays above fair trade benchmarks. Each bag names the farmer, variety and roast date.
The name borrows the idea of a city of many cultures, which the company applies to the chain of farmers, roasters, cafes and drinkers. Cafe Tolima, a year-round dark-medium roast, rotates among farmers and co-ops in Tolima. Meridiano comes from small farmers around Herrera who have sold to the company's partner supplier since 2009. Named producers include Jose Uribe Lasso, who bought his Huila farm El Diviso with savings from sugarcane work, and Alexander Vargas, a former coffee picker who now farms La Piragua in Huila.
The decaf is a sugarcane process coffee from the Bayter family's El Vergel farm in Fresno, Tolima.

Roast levels run light medium, medium and dark medium. House blends include Cafe Tolima and Meridiano. Single origins on the list when we checked: Jose Uribe Lasso Pink Bourbon and Bourbon Wonder.
