Cunningham Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
A family business: Sean sources and roasts, Melisa runs sales and design, and their kids help package coffee and handle store checklists. The Hawthorne roastery and tasting room opened in January 2024. Beans are sold by the ounce, and bringing a container takes $1 off each pound. Roasting is done on an electric roaster the company calls zero emissions, and customers can arrange to roast their own 5 lb batch.
Melisa took her first barista job in 2004 while studying Family Science at Oregon State, and later directed operations for a coffee company that grew to seven Northwest locations and more than 50 staff. Sean, the cofounder and head roaster, spent over 25 years in food, retail and customer service before roasting full time. The roaster is a fully electric Bellwether machine, and green beans come through a local warehouse that stocks coffees from many origins.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium, medium/dark and dark. House blends include Signature Espresso Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Limmu Kossa, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil and Sumatra. Espresso: Signature Espresso Blend. Decaf: Colombia Decaf. Why buying from Cunningham Coffee Roasters matters here
Its coffee is poured at Clinton Street Coffeehouse in Portland, Jazzy Bagels in Gresham and several Kaiser medical offices around the metro. Paper cups are not used at the tasting room. Guests bring a cup, take one from the mug library or use Okapi reusables. From 2018 to 2024 the family supplied coffee for staff and events at Glencoe Elementary, its neighborhood school, and it backs Every Child Oregon's work for children in state care.
