Mt. Hood Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Rhododendron, founded in 2002. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Rick and JiYeon Applegate started the business in 2002 and ran it for more than 20 years before retiring. Longtime friends Marcy and Mel, who both bought homes in Rhododendron and were regular customers, took over the shop and kept the coffee unchanged. Beans are air roasted in small batches, a method that keeps them moving in a stream of hot air instead of against a heated surface.
Batches run 12 to 15 pounds each, all 100 percent arabica. The FAQ says certified organic beans are bought when possible, and the Swiss Water decaf is always certified organic. Marcy and Mel have been friends for almost 40 years across several states. They gave the small shop a fresh look after taking it over from the retiring founders.
What they roast
Roast levels run Medium and Dark. House blends include Barlow Trail and Applegate Trail. Single origins on the list when we checked: Sumatra. Decaf: Swiss Water Process decaf. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-28.

Why buying from Mt. Hood Roasters matters here
The shop sits on the road up the mountain, about 11 minutes from Mt. Hood Ski Bowl and 24 from Timberline Lodge. Each year the shop runs fundraisers with local organizations. Supporters buy 12 ounce bags such as Trillium Trail and Barlow Trail, and 20 percent of each order goes to the group they choose.
Every bag bought from a Rhododendron roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Oregon, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
