Takelma Roasting Co. is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Roseburg. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Takelma Roasting belongs to the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians, a federally recognized tribe whose homeland lies in southwestern Oregon between the Coast Range and the Cascades. Every roast profile is paired with a word from the Takelma language, the tribe's traditional tongue, which elders and leaders have worked to revive. Retail partners include Market of Choice, People's Co-Op and several Seven Feathers shops, and a number of local cafes, pubs and breweries serve it.
In their own language the Cow Creek people are also known as the Nahankuotana. Their homeland takes in the Umpqua and Rogue River valleys, the only place where Takelma has been spoken.

Roast levels run Medium, Dark and French. House blends include Plank House Blend (medium), Mountain Roast and 40th Anniversary Roast. Single origins on the list when we checked: Burundi. The Plank House Blend, a medium roast of Guatemalan and Nicaraguan beans, carries the Takelma word for house. The Burundi single origin comes from the Dusangirijambo cooperative. A chocolatey medium dark roast of Colombian and Guatemalan beans marks the 40th anniversary of the tribe's federal recognition.
