Proud Mary Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2009. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Proud Mary began in Melbourne, Australia, in 2009, started by the married couple Nolan and Shari Hirte. Its American side roasts at a facility on N Williams Avenue in Portland and runs cafes in Portland and in Austin, Texas. The online menu groups coffees into Mild, Curious and Wild lines, plus a Deluxe tier that includes Geisha lots from Panama.
The first Proud Mary opened in Collingwood, a Melbourne suburb. Its Alberta Street cafe in Portland arrived in 2017 as the first US outpost, and a cafe in Austin's Zilker neighborhood followed in 2022. Daily Coffee News described the Portland method in 2019: small sample batches set the profile, then a full 60 kilo bag is roasted in a day, rested nine days in a cellar, vacuum packed in one pound bricks and frozen.
What they roast
House blends include Ghost Rider Blend, Angel Wings Blend and Humbler Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Guatemala La Danta, Guatemala Ojo de Agua, Nicaragua Las Delicias Javanica, Nicaragua Buenos Aires Maracaturra, Honduras Ovidio Gomez Natural and Panama Finca Auromar Geisha. Why buying from Proud Mary Coffee matters here
Espresso grinder hoppers at the Portland bar sit inside a wall mounted freezer that Nolan Hirte modified himself. He told the trade paper he ruined two freezers before the third one worked. Both American cafes have offered cups of coffee priced at $150, which drew stories from Oregon Public Broadcasting and Eater Portland, Wikipedia notes.
