Push X Pull is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Oregon: an independent roaster based in Portland, founded in 2012. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Christopher Hall began roasting in 2012 inside his Portland apartment. Emma later joined as co-owner and runs operations. The first cafe opened on SE Stark Street in January 2018. In September 2022 the company added a Seattle shop on East Union Street in the former Union Coffee and Wine space. The roaster leans toward naturals, honeys, anaerobic lots and other fruit-forward, experimental coffees.
Daily Coffee News named Jacob Cowdin as a co-founder with Hall in 2018. The two built the Stark Street cafe in roughly six weeks, relying on friends, family and local woodworkers and fabricators. Wikipedia lists Hall and Emma Mansanti as the current owners. The name points to a balance of opposing life forces. At opening the Stark cafe seated 35 to 40 people and kept two single origin espressos and two batch brews on offer. In 2022 the owners bought a 7 kilo roaster and leased a roasting space away from the cafe. A second Portland cafe, with a Loring roaster in view of customers, opened near SE 6th Avenue and Market Street on November 4, 2024.
