The short answer, and how we chose
To drink a Portland roaster's coffee where it is roasted, go to the cafes the roasters run themselves. Nine roasters we list run 23 cafes inside Portland between them, and Coava's roastery on SE Main St has a public brew bar. Southeast Portland has the most of them, and downtown and NE Alberta St have small clusters of their own.
Every cafe on this page passed three tests, checked on 2026-09-27:
- It is run by a roaster we list: roasting in Oregon and operating when we checked.
- The roaster publishes the cafe's name and street on its own locations page.
- It was open to the public when we checked. We left out places marked as not yet open, like Case Study's drive-thru on SE Morrison St, and roasteries with no public hours.
There is no ranking here and nobody paid to be on it. A listing does not mean a roaster is part of our club. Hours change, so check a cafe's own page before a special trip.
Southeast Portland
This side of town holds the most roaster-run cafes, and the only roastery with a public brew bar.
- Coava, three stops. The Coava Flagship at 1300 SE Grand Ave was the first cafe, opened in 2010, and it once held all the roasting. The Cafe and Roastery at 1015 SE Main St has the public brew bar, open Wednesday to Friday when we checked, and weekend cuppings and brewing classes. The Coava Espresso Bar at 2631 SE Hawthorne Blvd has a couch and a fireplace for rainy days. Order a single origin: Coava names each for its producer and rotates them by season.
- Nossa Familia, two cafes, both open daily. The Central Eastside Cafe is at 1633 SE 3rd Ave. The Seven Corners Cafe at 2007 SE Division St opened in summer 2018 as a zero waste cafe, inside the building that houses Community Vision, a nonprofit helping Oregonians with disabilities live and work in their communities. Try a coffee from the family farms in Brazil.
- Water Avenue's flagship cafe is at 1028 SE Water Ave, Suite 145. Bull Run is the flagship blend.
- Portland Coffee Roasters runs one cafe, at 815 SE Oak St, open daily from 6am to 4pm when we checked. Ask for the La Hilda Estate from Costa Rica, a coffee it has roasted every year since its first direct trade shipment.
- Roseline's Goat Blocks cafe is at 1015 SE 11th Ave #100.
- Heart's Woodstock cafe is at 5181 SE Woodstock Blvd, farther out in the southeast. It has no WiFi on purpose and sells Heart's full whole bean line.
One more southeast stop is not a cafe. Trailhead roasts in the restored Glass Lab Building at 350 SE Mill St and lists no cafe, but its staff are at the roastery for in person sales on Mondays and Tuesdays. Go early in the week if you want a bag straight from the roaster.
Northeast Portland and East Burnside
- Heart's first cafe, at 2211 E Burnside St in the Kerns neighborhood, opened in 2009 and is still pouring. Heart does not label coffees light, medium or dark, so ask the barista what is brewing and what it tastes like.
- Case Study started on Sandy Boulevard in Rose City Park, and the Sandy Blvd cafe at 5347 NE Sandy Blvd is open every day. Its Alberta cafe at 1422 NE Alberta St, in the King neighborhood, opened in 2014. Order the Burnside Blend, named for the street that divides north and south Portland.
- Roseline has an Alberta cafe too, at 1725 NE Alberta St, so one street gives you two roasters to compare. Its Davis Flagship Cafe is at 321 NE Davis St. Try Oro, which Roseline describes as chocolate, caramel and toasted nut.
Downtown and Southwest
Downtown is where the roasters meet office towers and hotel lobbies.
- Case Study Downtown, 802 SW 10th Ave, opened in 2012. The Oregonian put Case Study on its 2017 list of the ten best coffee shops in downtown Portland. Its PSU cafe is at 1855 SW Broadway, at Portland State University. The house espresso is the Deviation Blend.
- Roseline has two downtown cafes: one in the Woodlark Hotel at 813 SW Alder St and one in the KOIN Tower at 222 SW Columbia St.
- Water Avenue runs its Southwest cafe in the Clyde Hotel at 1026 SW Harvey Milk St and another in the Wells Fargo Center lobby at 1300 SW 5th Ave.
Northwest Portland and the Pearl
- Sterling has one cafe, at 518 NW 21st Ave, open daily from 6:30 on weekdays and 7:30 on weekends when we checked. Every coffee is named for how it tastes, and Blendo Stupendo is the signature. Online orders from within two miles of NW Portland get a local discount.
- Roseline's Montgomery Park cafe is at 2701 NW Vaughn St #102. One of the company's own artists from this cafe drew the camp cup sold in its shop.
- Sisters Coffee roasts in Central Oregon, but it runs a Portland cafe in the Pearl District, the Pearl Cafe at 1235 NW Marshall St. Order Black Butte Gold, its dark, caramelized blend.
Just past the city line
Two more stops for anyone already heading out of the city. Roseline's seventh cafe is in Lake Oswego, at 16398 Boones Ferry Rd. In downtown Hillsboro, Dapper & Wise roasts behind its sister cafe, Insomnia Coffee Co., at 317 E Main St, and invites visitors to stop by the roastery; the roasting staff keep weekday hours, 8am to 3pm.
