Espresso roast: what the label means on an Oregon bag

A roast made for pressure and a fine grind. It comes light, medium or dark.

What is espresso roast?

Espresso roast is a coffee the roaster has roasted, alone or in a blend, to taste good brewed as espresso: hot water forced at high pressure through a fine grind in under half a minute. It names a purpose, not a color. Espresso roasts run from light to dark, and one Portland roaster roasts the same coffees one way for espresso and another for drip.

Is espresso roast the same as dark roast?

No. Wikipedia's espresso article calls the idea that espresso must use dark-roast beans a widespread myth: espresso is made from many types of beans and roast levels. An Oregon roaster can hand you a light roast espresso and a dark one from the same shelf.

What an espresso roast does share is a goal. A shot takes about 25 to 30 seconds and yields about 25 to 30 ml, so everything in the coffee is concentrated: sweetness, acidity, bitterness and body all get louder. Roasters pick the roast, and the beans in a blend, with that concentrated cup in mind. The foam on top of a shot is the crema.

How Oregon roasters roast for espresso

Oregon roasters take several approaches. These are roasters we list that publish espressos on their own sites, checked 2026-09-27. A listing does not mean a roaster is part of the club or in a box.

  • Coava in Portland sells most of its coffees in either a drip roast profile or an espresso roast profile. That is the clearest proof that espresso roast is about purpose.
  • Trailhead in Portland roasts Black Label as a light roast espresso, a Classic Espresso, Provisions in a Pacific Northwest style and a semi-dark Winter Espresso.
  • Case Study builds Deviation Blend from Guatemalan, Ethiopian and Peruvian coffees. Sisters Coffee says its Espresso Blend is built for chocolate richness with some acidity. Wandering Goat in Eugene roasts Espresso Chupacabra, and Lone Pine in Bend sells Heartwood Blend as an espresso roast.
  • Backporch in Bend roasts Backporch Blend and Singletrack for espresso, both medium. Portland Coffee Roasters roasts its Organic Espresso medium-dark.
  • Dapper & Wise in Hillsboro makes Stag, a dark espresso blend of Nicaraguan and Peruvian coffees, and a decaf Stag.
  • Noble in Ashland sells a single origin espresso from Mexico alongside its World Tour and Pompadour blends, plus a water processed decaf World Tour.

Caravan in Newberg pours espresso flights in its tasting room, a way to taste several espressos side by side. Buying espresso beans from one of these roasters keeps your morning shot tied to a real Oregon roastery and its staff. Why local roasters matter.

You can brew an espresso roast in a drip machine or a French press. It will taste different from a shot, and some people prefer it that way.

Getting espresso roast from the club

Set the style to Espresso in the plan builder; the espresso subscription page walks through it. Choose whole bean if you grind at home, since a shot needs a finer grind than most pre-ground coffee. The roast level is up to you: pick Light, Medium, Dark or Mix. Each box brings a 12 oz bag from a different independent Oregon roaster at $16.99 a bag, every 2 or 4 weeks, and a two-bag box can carry an espresso next to a drip coffee. First bag free, you pay $7.99 shipping.
