Coffee in Ashland

Ashland has an odd place in American coffee. Alfred Peet, who founded Peet's Coffee, moved here in 2001 after he retired and died here in 2007. The town's best-known roaster today is Noble Coffee Roasting, which opened its coffeehouse and roastery in the historic Railroad District in May 2009. Ashland's coffee story

Alfred Peet started the coffee company that carries his name, and after he retired he moved to Ashland in 2001. He lived here until his death in 2007, so one of the best-known names in American coffee spent his last years in this town.

Noble Coffee Roasting began the same year Peet died. In 2007 Jared Rennie set up a Probat roaster in his garage with a pallet of green coffee from around the world. Restaurants, cafes, hotels and bed and breakfasts around the Rogue Valley began serving it, and as that wholesale trade grew he opened the Noble Coffeehouse and Roastery on 4th Street in Ashland's historic Railroad District in May 2009.

Everything happens under one roof. Roasting, packing and brewing all take place at the Fourth St coffeehouse, and the menu runs from two espresso blends, World Tour and Pompadour, to Mokha Java, a classic blend, and Daydream, a darkly roasted one. Noble also wants home and professional baristas to know how to brew what it roasts, so education is part of its stated mission.

The recognition followed. Food & Wine named Noble the best coffee in Oregon in 2018 and again in 2022. Noble buys green coffee from organic farms and cooperatives, and it lists competition finalists and winners for its single origins, many of them Ethiopian lots, in most years from 2011 to 2022.
