Coffee on the Oregon Coast
The coast's roasters are spread up and down the shore. Columbia River Coffee Roaster has roasted in Astoria since 1992. In Cannon Beach, Sleepy Monk has spent decades roasting organic specialty coffee in small batches, and one of its blends, Oregon Fog, is named for the fog that rolls over the coast. Multnomah Coffee Club sends a bag from a different Oregon roaster in every box, and the coast is on that map.
The coast's coffee story
Astoria's roasting goes back at least to 1992, when Columbia River Coffee Roaster started. Roast Local lists a second Astoria roaster, Astoria Coffee Company.
Cannon Beach's roaster is better known by its old coffee shop. For years the Sleepy Monk shop had a summer line out the door, with people and dogs lounging outside, and a steady stream of regulars in winter. Visitors from Seaside and Manzanita came to know it the way residents did. That shop has now closed for good. The roastery on the outskirts of Cannon Beach is still roasting, though it is closed to visitors, and the coffee is sold online and through grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and hotels on the coast and beyond.
The Sleepy Monk menu reads like a coastal logbook. Rusty Nail, a French roast blend, has been on it since the coffee shop first opened. Gaelic Grounds, a blend of medium and dark roasts, has been one of its most popular coffees for more than 20 years. Cannon Beach Brackish Brew is another French roast named for the town.
